Running – “The most expensive free sport in the world!” or “Running, the love/hate sport!”

So I just bought my 5th pair of running shoes. Who knew, that me, a guy who wore the same shoes for 5 years until I literally wore through the soles until you could see my socks peaking out the bottom would eventually be buying a new pair of shoes about every 6 months.   It all started with this stupid running thing. Really, a few years ago, I was the guy that swore I would only run if something were chasing me.  Even then, it would have to be something with lots of fur, sharp pointy teeth, razor claws and probably some pretty hanus drool.  At this point, I would attempt to run from said creature, only to have my heart explode, my legs fall off, and then I would die a horrible sharp, pointy, drooly death.  I was resolved to this fact.  I knew my fate, if perchance, I were to happen upon a creature and I was okay with that. Then I met Princess and Biker #2, the runners.  (I know that Biker #2 implies a cyclist, and she does cycle, but her primary sport is running.)  They were convinced that they could turn me into a runner. Princess would state that he used to say the same thing, that he would only run if the cops were chasing him.  (I am less afraid of cops than I am of giant sharp drool monsters, FYI.)  Eventually they wore me down and I decided to try to do a 5k.  3.1 miles.  This was further than I had ever run in my life, but it seemed like an obtainable goal. Okay, well, not really.  I had never even run the full mile in school because I had no idea of how to properly pace myself or to run properly so I would sprint the first 100 ft, get out of breath and say screw it and walk/jog the rest of the mile and complain the whole way about how stupid it was. So, a 5k.  Why not?  What is the worst that could happen? I needed a plan, so I grabbed my smartphone and found the “Couch to 5k” app.  “The idea is to transform you from...

Out with the old, in with the new!

So it has finally come time to say goodbye to my old friends.  My first pair of legitimate running shoes. When I first decided I wanted to try this running thing Princess and Biker #2 insisted that I go get actual running shoes from Portland Running Company.  Up to this point in life I had just gone to Big 5 or Gart or some other retailer that had shoes and found what was on sale and looked good, tried them on and walked around.  If they were squishy I was good.  Apparently there is a lot more that goes into finding a proper running shoe and I am glad I took my friend’s advice and got shoes that were fitted to me and dealt with my pronation. (I am still not sure what that is but I am sure it is important and I am glad I have shoes that help with it.) After my last race I decided it was time to retire my first set of shoes.  They had served me well for over a year, through training for races and just casual running but I knew it was time to retire them because my knees were starting to hurt when I ran, and because Princess told me so. So off to Portland Runnign Company again I went and picked up these beauties!  I call this stealth mode because they just look like ordinary black shoes.  Nothing special… maybe a little design on the top but nothing crazy.  I will say that they are water resistant and have a sock liner inside so they hug your feet pretty nicely.  But now we get to the best part of the new shoes… These suckers light up like fireworks when hit with light.  I of course had to add my trademark safety orange shoelaces as well.  I am not sure why they went with the leopard print but it is growing on me.  So that is how I ended 2013, with some new shoes! Now its time for 2014!  This is going to be an epic year and I have some big plans for races and adventures and stuff and to kick it off Heisenbaker signed us up for...
