The Ho Ho Run! (freaking cold edition)

The Ho Ho Run! (freaking cold edition)

on Dec 8, 2013

So, back in October, when weather was warm, zombies were running amok and we were all excited about 5k’s we decided to sign up for the Ho Ho 5k.  At the time it seemed like a great idea.  It was in December, it was holiday themed and we would get free hot cider and Ho Ho’s, why wouldn’t we do it. Today we learned about running in the cold.  Typically we are used to temperatures in the 30’s – 40’s being cold but this winter it has been especially brutally cold and this morning the temperature was a whopping 17 degrees fahrenheit.  Suddenly running a 5k seemed like a less great idea. Unfortunately we are a stubborn people and had already paid for the Ho Ho 5k and didn’t want to be seen as weak and namby pamby so we put on as much thermal clothing as we could find and hopped in the car and headed out. It’s interesting when you are preparing for a race that is going to be run in 17 degrees.  You have to calculate how you are going to layer and how much.  You don’t want to wear too little and be cold the whole time but you know once you get moving you are going to warm up.  This is good, because being warm is good… until you sweat, then the sweat cools down and you get chilled and… well that has been known to kill people.  Most people don’t want to dye, especially from something stupid like sweating. I decided to wear my new Pearl Izumi fleece lined thermal tights I got for cycling in the cold and my running shorts, wool socks, my Nike Combat Gear base layer and my Columbia Thermal Shirt and my no name not sure what the material is jacket.  I also added my cycling gloves and my favorite tuque for good measure.  This worked well for me.  I was unpleasantly cold for most of the standing around time and then nice and warm while running but not too warm that I was sweating buckets, and then mildly unpleasantly cold once again I stopped running.  I have decided that at this point being slightly unpleasant is...

Zombie Apocalypse Run 2013

Zombie Apocalypse Run 2013

on Oct 13, 2013

The Zombie Apocalypse run this year was awesome!  Pictured above in order from left to right is Biker #2, Princess, NotSoFatty (me), and Heisenbaker (my awesome wife)!  We all went and had a great time. As the last blog post stated this run has a special importance to me since it is the first actual official 5k that I have paid for and run.  Last year we were all survivors and had a great time but since Biker #2 and Princess are both avid runners (the jerks) they decided they wanted to be the zombies this year and chase everyone down.  Princess was especially excited to catch me, push me down and steal my flags.  I told him I was going to take a pellet gun and make sure to shoot him in the head.  DOUBLE TAP!! I was worried yesterday about running this race and wondered if I would even do any good.  I had been sick the last week and a half and had not had a chance to get out and do any training runs due to the black lung.  That on top of an IT Band injury I have been nursing and refusing to admit that I actually have since spring made me a bit nervous, but I was determined to run and best my time from last year. We were all excited to go this year and learn from last year.  The first learning experience was getting to the race.  It is in Dayton somewhere, which is a bit of a drive for us but worth it.  Last year we left with what we thought was plenty of time and then found that there was a ferry that we had to cross.  We made it just in time last year, so this year we left plenty early to accommodate for the ferry ride and get there early so we could hang out and not feel rushed.  So, Biker #2 and Princess got to our house to pick us up and we left.  We got about a mile down the road and I realized I didn’t have my race bib.  Have you ever had something in your hand one second, set it down and then...

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE… RUN!

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE… RUN!

on Oct 13, 2013

For a long time I have been wanting to start a blog.  I set up my website a couple of weeks ago and have since been trying to figure out how to start.  I finally decided, I will just start! So… as the title states,  ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE… RUN! Tonight is the annual Zombie Apocalypse Run ( http://www.zombieapocalypserun.com/ ).  This is my favorite 5k to run.  I suppose that is partially because I love horror movies and zombies and things of that nature, and this is the 1st 5k I ever ran, so it holds a  special place for me. I suppose a little bit of background is in order here so you understand the importance that this 5k has actually played in my life.  To me it is a bit more important than just a fun run with an awesome, scary, zombie theme. Last year, I  I decided that I was fat, lazy and generally unhealthy.  I wasn’t morbidly obese or anything, but I couldn’t run to the end of the block feeling like I was going to die.  My 2 best friends, Princess and Biker #2 (There is a story to the names that we will tackle in a later post) were runners and were constantly running marathons, and half marathons and doing things like Portland Fit and talking about running and how much they loved running and how running was so great and running, running, running, blah blah blah.  It was really quite aggravating and made me want to Nancy Kerrigan them. (my term for hitting them in the knee with a pipe) Princess was talking all the time about how before he became a runner he always swore he would only run if the police were chasing him and I could relate to that sentiment.  The other day I saw a quote that said, “If you see me running, you should start running too because it means something bad is headed this way!“  That is how I felt.  Running was a means of surviving by escaping from something bad coming to kill you, or eat your face off.   Like a zombie!  That being said, I couldn’t have outrun a zombie if my life depended on it...
